The ongoing project Stay Gold operates as both narrative thread within the exhibition by representing dreamlike images of a near future and like a book where the text has been amputated from its pages and only the illustrations that represent its ideas have come down to us. It is interesting how this project has mutated over the years from abstraction to figuration. All the sequences shown in the tapestries represent imaginary machines, hybrid fluids, haunted landscapes and magical species while conjuring up a retro–futuristic presence. This flow between different narratives weaves a web of formal contingencies between different historical moments that turn out to be closer than might be expected. The result is an image of fragmented time, a sort of network of connections between different archaeologies
.
These tapestries have been made on Jacquard-type looms, the first system to automate tapestry weaving using punch cards; a direct ancestor of the computer and of current manufacturing facilities. The fabrics produced on Jacquard looms are characterized by their resistance and durability —something of the utmost importance in the exhibition as it conflicts with other pieces. The information they contain will therefore be preserved for a long time
.
Stay Gold tapestries are metaphor-objects of the Homeric literary figure that links cloth and memory and the act of narrating to that of spinning —we say “the narrative thread” and “lose thread”. Archaeology has spent at least 200 years trying to extrapolate the information obtained from a singular fragment to understand an entire civilization
